The migration begins at the environment level. Ubisoft says all players will be moved to the new crossplay system rather than maintaining separate legacy and crossplay infrastructures.
Actual cross-platform matchmaking remains configurable. It will default to enabled and can be disabled from Character Selection.
Persistent social data has to move with the player base
Clans are being migrated as part of the transition. Membership will no longer be restricted to one platform, and maximum clan size increases from 50 to 100.
Leaderboards are another system that cannot simply continue unchanged. Ubisoft will reset them when crossplay launches and incorporate crossplay settings into their display.
The company has not published a technical breakdown of the backend rewrite, server topology or identity layer involved in the migration.
The primary performance metric is queue health
Ubisoft's stated objective is not lower rendering latency or a new networking model for combat. The immediate advantage is a larger matchmaking population.
Pooling compatible players across platforms should make it easier to populate activities and shorten queues during periods when an individual platform has fewer active users.
Details such as input-based matchmaking rules and the complete platform-pool matrix were not specified during the Gamescom presentation.
Meanwhile, more systems are being added to the same service
Red Horizon launches August 27 with another layer of seasonal mechanics. Its Pressure Gauge accumulates through combat and interacts with Active and Passive Modifiers.
The Toxic PvE Dark Zone becomes permanent. Blackout joins the PvP rotation and removes normal power restrictions, allowing SHD Watch bonuses, Expertise and Prototype Gear to operate at full strength.
Season 4 is already scheduled to revisit Prototype Gear progression, reducing its reliance on RNG and changing Expertise and Augments. Escalations are also being made more configurable.
Seven years of compatibility have become part of the engineering problem
The Division 2 launched in March 2019 and has accumulated expansions, seasons, PvE and PvP systems, persistent inventories, clans and years of progression data.
Introducing a shared-platform environment after that accumulation is a different engineering problem from designing crossplay into a new game's identity and matchmaking stack from day one.
Ubisoft is still extending the content layer as the infrastructure changes underneath it. Echoes of Central Park is the next expansion, with a dedicated reveal scheduled for September 24.
The crossplay migration is due in November.
