Some of the clearest evidence for Switch 2's hardware improvement comes from games Nintendo did not build.
The September 9 Direct confirmed or detailed Monster Hunter Wilds, Persona 6, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, Resident Evil 2 Deluxe Edition, Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition for the system.
These projects use engines, asset pipelines and visual budgets much closer to current console development than much of the software the original Switch could comfortably execute.
Monster Hunter Wilds should be an especially useful benchmark
Wilds launches December 4 with an estimated 39.1GB file size.
Nintendo confirms HDR support, online multiplayer for up to four players and full cross-platform multiplayer. Previously released Title Update content is included.
Capcom has not yet published the technical information that will ultimately define the quality of the conversion: internal resolution, frame-rate target, shadow quality, draw distance, environmental density and exact visual reductions.
Those claims should wait for proper analysis.
Still, running Wilds locally is meaningful given the scale of its environments and the performance demands seen on other hardware.
RE Engine no longer needs the cloud route
Resident Evil makes the generation gap easier to see.
Several modern entries reached the original Switch through cloud versions in some regions, meaning the demanding rendering workload happened on remote hardware and the console received a video stream.
Resident Evil 2 Deluxe Edition, Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition launch digitally on Switch 2 on October 16.
These are local Switch 2 releases built around Capcom's RE Engine rather than cloud-streamed substitutes.
That is exactly the kind of capability shift a new hardware generation is supposed to deliver.
Final Fantasy VII Revelation is being developed for the main launch window
Final Fantasy VII Revelation matters for a different technical reason.
Square Enix is not producing a late conversion years after launch. Switch 2 is part of the April 8, 2027 release alongside PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
The Nintendo version therefore has to progress through development beside the other target platforms rather than being reconstructed afterward.
Nintendo's listing confirms HDR output and linear PCM surround audio.
The physical edition will require an additional data download, although that policy also applies to physical versions on other platforms and should not be treated as a uniquely Switch 2 storage compromise.
Persona 6 is less of a GPU test and more of a platform test
Persona 6 is unlikely to be the hardest rendering workload in this group.
Its significance comes from Atlus targeting Switch 2 directly with a new mainline entry.
Hardware capability only solves half of the third-party problem. Publishers also need a platform to be straightforward enough to support economically throughout production.
A console receiving games inside the main release strategy is therefore a useful technical signal even when the individual title is not a graphics benchmark.
Modern hardware makes the compromise cheaper
The original Switch produced remarkable ports, but developers often paid for them through low internal resolutions, reduced assets, lower frame rates and substantial custom optimization.
Switch 2 combines much faster hardware with a more modern graphics architecture, more memory and upscaling technologies that can reconstruct a cleaner output from lower internal resolutions.
None of that guarantees PS5-equivalent versions.
It expands the range in which compromises can remain commercially and visually acceptable.
The real examination starts when the frame-time graphs arrive
A Nintendo Direct is not a performance analysis.
Monster Hunter Wilds may still require aggressive reductions. Resident Evil 4 may alter settings significantly. Final Fantasy VII Revelation may target a different frame rate from other console versions.
Those details are not confirmed yet.
What has changed is the premise of the discussion.
Switch 2 now has native versions worth benchmarking.
For several comparable games on the original Switch, the conversation sometimes never got that far.
