The numbers make more sense after the IFA preview

Xiaomi showed the 18 Fold in Berlin before giving most of its specifications away. The finished device uses a 5.38-inch outer display and opens into a 7.58-inch inner panel, with a shorter and wider shape than the tall book-style foldables that defined much of the category.

It weighs 219 grams and measures 5.02 mm thick when unfolded. Those figures matter because large foldables still have a fairly simple problem: they are only useful as everyday phones if carrying one does not feel like carrying two devices strapped together.

The software can place three apps side by side on the internal display. How useful that becomes outside Xiaomi's own demonstrations will depend on HyperOS, third-party app behaviour and how aggressively the system manages background tasks.

The more important change is the chip

The 18 Fold is powered by Xiaomi's own XRing O3 processor rather than a flagship Qualcomm or MediaTek platform. That gives Xiaomi more control over a component that determines performance, power management, imaging and an increasing amount of on-device AI processing.

The phone also uses LPDDR6 memory supplied by Chinese manufacturer CXMT. Xiaomi is pitching the package as a high-end AI platform, but the useful questions are less glamorous: sustained performance, battery drain and temperature inside an unusually thin folding chassis.

Independent testing will be needed there. A fast benchmark run is relatively easy. Keeping a foldable cool and consistent after prolonged camera use, gaming or multitasking is a different job.

Premium pricing, for China first

Prices run from 10,999 yuan to 14,999 yuan depending on configuration. Xiaomi is therefore not treating this as an experimental side product. The 18 Fold sits firmly in premium territory and is being positioned against the most ambitious foldables on the market.

The awkward part is availability. Xiaomi used its first major IFA presence to put the device in front of a European audience, yet the commercial launch is currently focused on mainland China. No European release date has been announced.

That makes the Berlin appearance slightly frustrating. The 18 Fold is thinner and lighter than many people might expect from a large folding phone, introduces Xiaomi's new silicon strategy and adopts a form factor that looks far more practical when closed.

For buyers outside China, none of that has a shipping date yet.
