Digital Foundry devotes a substantial section of its August 29 technical breakdown to lighting. Its own chapter title is unusually specific: shadow maps, RT reflections and RTGI.

Those labels should be attributed correctly. They are Digital Foundry's conclusions from visual analysis of the footage, not rendering documentation released by Rockstar.

Rockstar confirms the hardware instead: the entire Extended Look was captured from in-game footage running on a standard PlayStation 5.

RTGI solves a problem GTA creates constantly

Digital Foundry sees evidence of ray-traced global illumination across the presentation.

Global illumination concerns more than the light directly striking a surface. Light can bounce through the environment, influencing areas that are not directly exposed to the original source.

That matters in GTA VI because the player constantly moves between bright exterior spaces, covered streets, shops, motels and interiors. Lighting needs to respond to those transitions without every room feeling like an isolated lighting setup.

Digital Foundry treats this indirect-lighting behavior as a major contributor to the coherence of Rockstar's environments.

Reflections use ray tracing selectively

The Extended Look also provides evidence of ray-traced reflections in a number of scenes.

RT reflections can preserve objects that conventional screen-space reflections lose as soon as the relevant geometry disappears from the camera image.

That does not mean every puddle, vehicle and pane of glass is processed with an identical full RT solution. Digital Foundry's observations instead point toward hybrid rendering whose behavior changes with the material and scene.

Shadow maps reveal Rockstar's willingness to use cheaper technology

Digital Foundry still identifies conventional shadow maps as an important part of GTA VI's lighting pipeline.

Shadow mapping predates modern hardware ray tracing by decades. It comes with familiar limitations around resolution, filtering and distant detail, but it remains substantially cheaper than tracing every relevant shadow.

That trade makes obvious sense on base PS5 hardware.

Rockstar is already budgeting for an enormous open world, crowds, traffic, geometry, reflections and indirect lighting. Every rendering feature competes for the same finite frame time.

Hybrid rendering is not a technical apology

Rasterization and ray tracing do not have to be competing philosophies. Modern engines can use both within the same frame.

GTA VI appears to make that choice feature by feature.

Indirect lighting receives RT because bounced light can transform the entire appearance of an environment. Reflections can receive RT where screen-space approximations become distracting. Shadows can still use a cheaper established method where the visual result is sufficient.

The saved GPU time can then be spent somewhere else.

This is not path tracing on PS5

Nothing in Digital Foundry's analysis supports describing GTA VI as a path-traced console game.

Path tracing moves much more of the lighting equation toward ray tracing and remains extremely demanding even on powerful PC GPUs, where reconstruction and frame generation are commonly required to make the heaviest implementations practical.

Applying that label to Rockstar's PS5 rendering would therefore go substantially beyond the evidence.

Earlier footage left more ambiguity

Digital Foundry had previously questioned the behavior or apparent absence of some reflection effects in other GTA VI material.

The Extended Look provides a much better sample: almost 27 minutes covering gameplay, driving, interiors, nightlife and different times and conditions around Leonida.

That makes individual techniques easier to identify, although a compressed presentation still cannot reveal Rockstar's exact thresholds, quality settings or fallback logic.

The 30fps target gives the rendering choices context

Digital Foundry separately observes a presentation centered on 30fps and estimates an internal resolution around 1440p before upscale. Both figures come from analysis rather than an official Rockstar technical sheet.

Even with those compromises, PS5 has to fund RT lighting and reflections while the CPU and GPU are simultaneously handling a dense open world.

Replacing every conventional shadow or reflection technique with the most expensive RT alternative would have to take resources from somewhere else.

The best rendering pipeline is not the one with the longest feature list

Digital Foundry ultimately describes the Extended Look as one of the most extraordinary real-time graphical accomplishments it has seen.

That assessment is more interesting because GTA VI does not appear to be brute-forcing every modern technique at maximum cost.

A conventional shadow map can coexist with sophisticated bounced lighting. Ray-traced reflections can be deployed where their absence would be obvious. The result is judged as a frame, not as a checklist.

Rockstar has not released enough engine documentation to turn Digital Foundry's observations into an official RAGE rendering specification. What the footage does suggest is a clear priority: use ray tracing selectively enough that the entire PS5 image can remain ambitious.
