Square Enix is presenting a playable build of Final Fantasy VII Revelation at Tokyo Game Show 2026. The game launches April 8, 2027 on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam and the Epic Games Store.

That simultaneous release is already a major change from the first two Remake entries, which were initially much more closely tied to PlayStation hardware.

The Highwind demands continuity Rebirth could largely avoid

Rebirth used large open regions connected within a broader world structure. Revelation adds an aerial layer, allowing players to fly across the planet and choose far more freely where to descend.

That means the distant representation of a location, the aerial approach and the playable ground area have to connect more convincingly.

Square Enix has not explained the underlying streaming or level-generation technology, so it would be premature to make specific technical claims beyond what is visible in demonstrations.

Existing regions are being rebuilt around new movement

Revelation revisits areas from Rebirth, but the team says those spaces are not simply being copied.

Flight, vertical approaches and changes caused by Meteor give familiar regions different navigation requirements and a different visual context.

Locations designed for ground-based exploration now have to make sense when seen and approached from the air.

The combat system is carrying more variables too

Cid and Vincent become playable with distinct mechanics. Vincent mixes firearm combat with beast transformations, while Cid uses his lance for both focused attacks and wider control.

FITS add another layer by granting abilities and role specialisation without replacing the existing Synergy systems.

That increases the number of possible combat combinations while the interface still has to preserve the quick transition between real-time action and tactical command selection.

Switch 2 may become the most revealing version technically

Nintendo Switch 2 launches alongside the other versions rather than receiving a later port.

Square Enix has not yet published a detailed resolution, frame-rate or graphics comparison, so any precise assessment of the compromises would be speculative.

The official product information does confirm that the physical Switch 2 release uses a Game-Key Card and requires more than 130GB of free storage for the initial download.

TGS finally puts the architecture in public hands

Previous playable sessions were limited to press and controlled preview events. From September 17, TGS attendees can try the game publicly.

There is still no final technical specification for every platform, but the public demo offers a more useful look at world traversal, combat and transitions than another pre-rendered presentation could provide.

Revelation's challenge is no longer only to finish the Final Fantasy VII story. It also has to make the trilogy's largest world work across very different hardware without breaking the continuity the Highwind is designed to expose.
