Ray tracing is the flashy addition. Sixty frames per second is the upgrade that changes how The Witcher 3 actually feels.
The 2022 PS5 and Xbox Series X release offers a Performance mode targeting 60fps and an RT mode targeting 30fps. Both modernize an engine originally built around very different console limits, with higher-detail assets, faster storage and FSR 2.1 reconstruction.
The RT mode has a real visual case
Digital Foundry found ray-traced global illumination and ambient occlusion particularly effective in indirect lighting. Interiors and dense environments gain depth because bounced light and contact shading behave more naturally.
Their launch testing also found the compromise hard to ignore. PS5 could fall meaningfully below the 30fps target in RT mode, while response latency climbed substantially. Series X generally handled that mode more consistently, though neither console gained the immediacy of Performance mode.
Those measurements describe the launch build. CD PROJEKT RED continued patching the game afterward, including version 4.04, so they should not be treated as a fresh benchmark of every current scenario.
Performance mode fits the combat better
GameSpot preferred the 60fps option in its next-gen review, and the reason is easy to understand without turning the game into a numbers contest. Sword fights, camera movement and evasive inputs all benefit from the extra temporal resolution.
The broader upgrade is substantial as well. Digital Foundry recorded dramatically shorter loading on the new consoles compared with PS4 Pro, while foliage, shadows, textures and draw distances move well beyond the older versions.
A polished 2015 foundation is still a 2015 foundation
Animation transitions, physics oddities and AI behavior sometimes look older precisely because the rest of the image has become cleaner. Better rendering cannot rewrite every assumption underneath it.
CD PROJEKT RED is about to do considerably more rewriting. The official Witcher site now lists The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered for September 29, 2026, promising reworked lighting and rendering, upgraded textures and foliage, revised ray tracing, new combat animation, an overhauled skill tree and other changes.
This score therefore applies to the currently available Complete Edition before that release.
