Asobo does not need Unreal Engine to build its postcard

The technical consensus around Resonance begins with something remarkably consistent: reviewers notice the environments.

Mediterranean coastlines, Minoan ruins, chambers cut through by shafts of light and large island vistas are repeatedly identified as major strengths.

Wccftech praises the scale and lighting, The Guardian focuses on the vivid Cretan presentation, and Windows Central treats the visuals as one of the strongest parts of the entire experience.

Asobo is achieving that with its own technology.

Lighting is also part of the game logic

Light does two jobs in Resonance. It defines much of the island's visual identity, but it is also something Sophia manipulates.

Mirrors, lenses and Minoan mechanisms redirect beams through puzzle chambers, making lighting part of the player's reasoning rather than simply decoration.

That connection between rendering and interaction gives the effects more purpose than a conventional graphics showcase.

PS5 reports are broadly reassuring

Wccftech reviewed the PlayStation 5 version and found performance generally consistent across quality and performance options.

Available console comparisons still show the expected tradeoff: higher frame-rate targets reduce internal resolution and therefore image clarity.

That compromise is especially visible in a game whose fine architecture and lighting are such large parts of the appeal.

For combat and parry timing, the higher frame rate nevertheless has obvious practical value.

The PC version has useful scaling options

On Windows, players can adjust texture quality, shadows, volumetric lighting, draw distance, ambient occlusion and other settings.

DSOGaming confirms support for AMD FSR 3 and NVIDIA DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation on compatible hardware. Intel XeSS is not included.

There is no built-in benchmark, making repeatable performance testing less convenient.

Steam lists a 75GB storage requirement and specifies that an SSD is required.

The official hardware targets are relatively approachable

Minimum requirements pair processors such as the Ryzen 3 3100 or Core i3-12100 with a Radeon RX 5500 XT or GeForce GTX 1060 6GB, targeting 1080p at 30 frames per second on Low.

The recommended specification moves to a Ryzen 5 5600X or Core i5-12400F with an RX 6700 XT or RTX 3060 Ti and 16GB of memory.

The stated target is 1080p at 60 frames per second using the Ultra preset.

Asobo is therefore not treating its visual ambition as something reserved exclusively for flagship GPUs.

PC launch quality is the less consistent part

This is where the reports diverge.

PCGamesN encountered performance problems capable of breaking immersion and occasionally forcing a restart. Windows Central, by contrast, reports very strong performance on powerful hardware.

Those experiences can coexist. A game may scale extremely well at the high end while retaining scene-specific or configuration-specific problems elsewhere.

DSOGaming's dedicated analysis similarly shows meaningful scalability across several GPUs while providing a more nuanced picture than simply calling the PC version flawless.

The engine is particularly good at selling scale

Resonance is impressive less because of one isolated graphics feature than because its systems work together.

Draw distance, vegetation, rock, water, architecture and lighting combine to create spaces where Minotaur's Island feels like the point of the entire production.

Asobo also put substantial work into Sophia herself. The studio's development material describes simulated clothing elements designed to produce additional movement during running, climbing and combat.

Those details matter because the third-person camera keeps her close to the viewer for most of the game.

A strong showcase with a PC asterisk

Resonance is not technically perfect.

PC reports are inconsistent enough that drivers, updates and individual configurations should be considered before assuming every performance problem has the same cause.

The broader achievement remains difficult to dismiss: Asobo has an in-house engine capable of producing extremely rich environments while scaling across current consoles and a broad range of PC hardware.

A cleaner Windows launch would have made that demonstration considerably easier to celebrate without qualification.
