Halo Studios rebuilt a game originally designed around the first Xbox's 64MB of memory using Unreal Engine 5.
The technological distance is large enough for some comparisons to feel almost absurd.
Lumen transforms the Forerunner spaces
Modern global illumination and emissive lighting give metallic corridors, water, caves and monumental architecture a physical presence the 2001 renderer could only approximate.
Creative Bloq considers the visual overhaul one of the remake's major successes, while also reporting frame-rate drops during dense moments.
PS5 Pro provides the cleanest console presentation
Technical analysis identifies Quality and Performance profiles targeting 30fps and 60fps respectively. PS5 Pro benefits from cleaner PSSR 2 reconstruction, reducing shimmering and noise in fine detail compared with the base console.
Performance mode is the natural fit for a first-person shooter, although the busiest firefights can still fall below the target.
PC supports the full upscaling menu
DSOGaming reports individual settings for global illumination, reflections, geometry and lighting, alongside support for DLSS 4.5, FSR 4 and XeSS 2.0.
The platform scales far more gracefully across modern GPUs than any simple preservation release could.
Unreal Engine brings familiar complications
Digital Foundry was already watching typical UE5 performance behaviour in the preview build. The final release is considerably too solid to be defined by those concerns, but heavy scenes can still produce frame-rate instability.
PC options remain oddly selective
DSOGaming notes that film grain and chromatic aberration cannot be disabled through ordinary menu settings. Players who want them removed must currently resort to Engine.ini changes.
It is a small annoyance beside the otherwise extensive graphics suite.
The remake occupies up to 70GB
Halo Support lists a download size of 70GB or less. New textures, cinematics, reconstructed audio and Operation: METEORITE account for a project far larger than the original game's footprint.
The engine transition matters beyond this remake
Campaign Evolved is also a major public demonstration of Halo Studios' shift toward Unreal Engine 5 after decades of franchise-specific technology.
UE5 provides a standardised multiplatform pipeline and familiar development ecosystem. The more revealing technical test will be the first Halo designed around it without a 2001 level layout underneath.
