The most interesting technical choice in 007 First Light may be what IO Interactive refused to change.
The studio kept Glacier rather than moving to Unreal Engine 5, then extended it to handle car chases, large action sequences and path-traced PC rendering.
Ray-traced lighting survives on base consoles
Digital Foundry reports software ray-traced global illumination on both PS5 and PS5 Pro.
That suits First Light particularly well because hotels, museums, polished cars and elaborate interiors constantly expose indirect lighting and reflective materials.
Base PS5 protects 60fps at the expense of clarity
Performance mode targets 60fps and generally holds it very well according to Digital Foundry.
The internal image can sit around 720p before FSR 3.1.5 reconstruction, producing noticeable flicker and motion artifacts, especially in foliage.
Quality mode raises internal resolution to roughly 1152p at 30fps but cannot entirely eliminate the reconstruction problems.
PS5 Pro fixes the most visible weakness
The enhanced console combines settings close to base PS5 Quality mode with 60fps gameplay and much cleaner PSSR reconstruction.
Digital Foundry reports effectively locked gameplay performance aside from isolated drops during cutscene camera transitions.
PC moves all the way to path tracing
IO Interactive launched the PC version with path tracing, DLSS 4.5 Dynamic Multi Frame Generation and Ray Reconstruction on compatible RTX hardware.
DSOGaming also confirms a respectable graphics menu covering textures, terrain, level of detail and shadows.
DLSS 4.5 and AMD FSR are supported, while the launch version lacked Intel XeSS 2.0 and AMD FSR frame generation.
Lower presets do not always buy much performance
DSOGaming finds that dropping settings can provide surprisingly modest gains in some scenarios.
Players close to a hardware bottleneck therefore have fewer effective tuning options than the number of menu settings initially suggests.
Glacier now handles a much broader workload
The same engine moves between Hitman-style crowds, social spaces, vehicle sequences, explosions and large scripted action without a visible change of technological language.
That breadth is arguably a bigger achievement than any single rendering feature.
Post-launch support has been active
IO Interactive released multiple updates through July, addressing mission problems, stability and technical issues.
The current build is more mature than the original review version, although base PS5 image reconstruction remains an architectural compromise rather than a simple bug.
Switch 2 still requires separate judgment
IO officially scheduled the Nintendo Switch 2 version for 2026 but did not launch it alongside PC, PS5 and Xbox Series.
Without a sufficiently established final technical review corpus for that version, resolution and frame-rate claims would be premature.
Glacier still earns its place
First Light has real weaknesses, particularly base PS5 image clarity and imperfect PC settings scaling.
It also demonstrates that IO's proprietary technology can move beyond Hitman into a cinematic action game without losing its ability to manage dense interactive environments.
