CDPR puts Steam, PS5 and Xbox at roughly 45GB
Global Community Director Marcin Momot shared the estimates just days ahead of release. Steam users should expect a download of approximately 45GB, although CD Projekt RED notes that installed language packs can change that figure. The estimates for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are also approximately 45GB.
That number describes the update download. It should not be read as an additional 45GB permanently added on top of an existing Witcher 3 installation. Large upgrades replace existing assets as well as adding new ones, and CD Projekt RED did not use this announcement to provide one definitive post-update installation size across those platforms.
For practical purposes, the new figure is most useful for bandwidth planning. It tells players roughly how much data they need to pull down on September 29, not exactly how much SSD space the finished installation will occupy afterward.
Switch 2 is a separate download, and its storefront figures already vary
CD Projekt RED gives Nintendo Switch 2 a broader estimate of roughly 50GB and labels it a separate product. Nintendo's own listings confirm that Remastered downloads separately and appears as its own icon on the Switch 2 Home menu.
The current regional store pages are more specific, but not identical to that 50GB estimate. Nintendo UK lists a 42.3GB download, while Nintendo Australia's page currently shows 43.4GB.
There is no need to invent an explanation for the difference. Storefront figures can be reported separately from a developer's approximate pre-release estimate, and those are simply the verified numbers currently available. Treating “50GB” as an exact final file size would therefore be misleading.
This is considerably more than a texture refresh
The scale of the update makes a substantial download unsurprising. Remastered upgrades environment, NPC and monster textures, while also reworking lighting, rendering and ray-tracing features.
CD Projekt RED has gone further into the game itself. Combat animations and movement have been revised, the camera can adapt to encounters, monster behavior is being updated and character progression has been rebuilt around a redesigned skill tree.
Transmogrification, a larger photo mode and expanded mod support are also part of the release. Remastered is positioned as a modernization of the full game rather than a simple high-resolution asset pack.
Existing owners get the upgrade on September 29
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered launches September 29, 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. CD Projekt RED is offering it as a free upgrade to eligible owners on GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, PS5 and Xbox Series.
Owners of the original Nintendo Switch version can also claim the Switch 2 Remastered edition at no additional cost. New Switch 2 buyers can purchase the separate version directly.
Remastered includes Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. CD Projekt RED has also made both existing expansions available at no additional cost to base-game owners, while the new Songs of the Past expansion is scheduled for 2027.
Plan for 45 to 50GB, not a final installation equation
The useful launch-day estimate is now straightforward: around 45GB for Steam, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with CDPR recommending an approximately 50GB expectation for Switch 2. Steam users may need somewhat more or less depending on language data.
What players should not do is add those numbers directly to their current installation and assume the result is the final footprint. The download requirement is known. The exact amount of storage left occupied after the remaster finishes replacing files will be clearer once the September 29 build is actually deployed.
