This was a prototype people could actually hold
TECNO brought the concept to IFA ShowStoppers rather than limiting the announcement to renders. Android Central handled the device on the show floor and found that, at a glance, the effect is remarkably convincing.
The display seems to run directly into the metal frame. The usual dark strip surrounding a phone screen is almost impossible to see, although the punch-hole selfie camera remains in the panel.
It looks much closer to the old all-screen concept renders than most production phones do.
Zero millimetres is partly a visual trick
TECNO describes the design as having a 0mm display border, but that wording needs context. Tech Advisor reports that a very small outer portion of the 6.78-inch screen remains non-responsive to touch.
Instead of simply removing every structure around the panel, TECNO extends and packages the display so the remaining border is effectively hidden behind its edge. The phone also retains a physical frame that gives a hand somewhere to grip.
So the bezel is visually gone more completely than it is structurally gone.
The panel runs at 144Hz
The concept uses a 6.78-inch OLED display with a refresh rate of up to 144Hz. TECNO says getting the panel this close to the chassis required changes to internal component stacking, structural engineering and screen packaging.
The company has not published the kind of complete specification sheet expected for a launch phone. Processor, battery capacity and detailed camera hardware are beside the point for this prototype.
That leaves the harder engineering questions unanswered. A border also provides room for structural protection, antennas and other components, and an exposed display edge has to survive drops as well as a conventional design.
There is no release date because there is no retail phone yet
The hardware shown in Berlin was functional enough to be handled, which already puts it ahead of many trade-show concepts.
TECNO nevertheless says the device remains in the concept and prototype stage. There is no announced price, release date or commercial market.
That distinction matters. This is evidence that TECNO can build the design, not evidence that consumers will be able to order one next month.
The rear panel is doing its own strange thing
Turn the phone around and the minimalism disappears. The white rear panel uses an iridescent pattern with a three-dimensional visual effect that changes as the device moves.
TECNO has experimented with photochromic materials, illuminated surfaces and unusual decorative treatments on previous concepts, so the back fits a broader design habit rather than appearing completely out of nowhere.
Three large camera circles sit vertically in one corner, but TECNO has not provided enough imaging specifications to treat them as anything more than part of the prototype hardware.
Bezels were doing a job
A few millimetres of border are not simply wasted space. They can help protect a panel, provide structural room and make a phone easier to hold without touching active pixels.
TECNO has now demonstrated that most of that border can be hidden convincingly on a working handset. Whether the same approach can survive mass production, cases, drop tests and years of ordinary use is a different problem.
For now, the bezel-free future works on an IFA show floor.
