The extended Raji: Kaliyuga gameplay shown during the Xbox Tokyo Game Show 2026 Broadcast makes the technical scale of the sequel's transformation much clearer.

Nodding Heads is using Unreal Engine 5 and specifically cites modern lighting features alongside modular world-building techniques.

The first Raji could control almost every frame

Raji: An Ancient Epic's isometric camera gave the studio an important technical advantage: environments were observed from a comparatively controlled set of angles.

A free third-person camera removes that safety. Architecture has to survive viewing from more directions, vertical transitions become exposed and spaces have to tolerate players testing their boundaries much more directly.

Nodding Heads says modern Unreal Engine 5 tools are helping increase scale while preserving the motifs, colours and architectural influences that made the original visually distinctive.

The murals are no longer static narrative illustrations

The original game used murals to communicate mythology and cultural context through largely static illustrated sequences. Kaliyuga expands them into more dynamic Memory Murals.

The studio describes these murals as breathing and telling living stories. That turns one of the series' strongest artistic signatures into an animation and presentation problem as well.

The goal is to modernise the delivery without replacing the aesthetic with generic real-time cutscenes.

Two protagonists require two very different visual-effects languages

The closer camera also makes combat effects substantially more demanding visually.

Raji relies on physical animation: flips, jumps, Trishul strikes and enemy launches. Darsh adds Siddhis involving energy spheres, gravity manipulation, time effects and even a black hole.

The challenge is not simply rendering those effects. They have to remain readable when multiple enemies, powers and follow-up attacks overlap close to the camera.

Custom evasion also multiplies animation transitions

Nodding Heads deliberately avoided giving both heroes one universal dodge roll. Raji uses sidesteps, flips and rolls, Darsh has his own spins and evasions, and each can lead into different follow-up attacks.

That increases the number of transitions required between locomotion, defence and offence. In return, it should prevent every defensive action from collapsing into the same canned animation.

For a sequel changing perspective this dramatically, the continuity between those animations may matter as much as their individual quality.

Performance targets remain unknown

Raji: Kaliyuga is confirmed for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The PC version is planned for Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG and Microsoft Store.

Nodding Heads has not published PC requirements, resolution targets, frame-rate targets or upscaling details.

It would therefore be premature to attach a specific performance cost to the announced Unreal Engine 5 features.

The real challenge is preserving a painted world without the old camera

Raji: An Ancient Epic could resemble an Indian illustration brought to life precisely because its camera composed environments almost like paintings.

Kaliyuga no longer has that fixed frame. Its visual success will depend on whether the same identity survives when players can circle architecture, inspect surfaces at close range and look in directions the artist did not explicitly compose.

Unreal Engine 5 gives Nodding Heads more modern tools. The new footage mainly demonstrates why the studio needs them.
