Ame no Chi Hare Onna is a free-to-play iOS and Android title developed by Game Freak and CHRONOGATE. Its most unusual technical feature is the direct connection between the game and real weather across Japan.
Weathernews supplies the meteorological data. Game Freak specifically identifies sun, rain, cloud and snow as conditions capable of changing the player experience.
External data becomes a gameplay variable
The important distinction is what the app does with that information. Players prepare Hare Onna patrol teams according to current conditions rather than simply seeing matching weather effects in the background.
Published screenshots place weather information directly in the interface, while forecasts are intended to help players anticipate future sessions.
That creates a game loop partly controlled by information outside the software itself. A clear day and a rainy day are not necessarily supposed to produce the same planning decisions.
Laundry becomes the maintenance layer
The rest of the loop is more familiar despite the strange terminology. Hare Onna patrol areas, transform for combat and return with their magical outfits dirtied by battle.
Washing restores those outfits for future activity. Game Freak officially calls this a “laundry game,” although the washing system sits alongside combat, characters and weather-driven events.
Japan-only weather makes global expansion less straightforward
The announced release is currently limited to Japan and Japanese-language service. No global version has been confirmed.
That matters because the weather connection is not just flavour text. Expanding the game would require an equivalent data strategy for additional territories and systems that behave sensibly across very different climates.
Game Freak has not yet explained the server architecture, weather refresh frequency or fallback behaviour when external meteorological data cannot be reached.
This is not being presented as a GPS movement game
Official material focuses on Japanese forecasts feeding the daily game experience rather than requiring players to physically travel to map coordinates.
The concept is closer to a persistent mobile game whose schedule and state are influenced by a live external service.
That is less visually dramatic than augmented reality, but it creates an interesting dependency: one of the important variables cannot be fully predetermined inside the client.
Winter launch, exact date still missing
Ame no Chi Hare Onna is scheduled for Winter 2026 in Japan on iOS and Android. It will be free-to-play with in-app purchases.
Game Freak has not announced a specific launch date or fully detailed the monetisation structure.
At Tokyo Game Show, the company is already extending the concept beyond the phone with real Weathernews forecast stages and physical giveaways that change depending on whether it actually rains around Makuhari.
