The Extended Look gives Digital Foundry something the earlier GTA VI trailers could not: enough sustained gameplay to inspect Rockstar's rendering without relying primarily on cinematic cuts.

Rockstar also removes one major uncertainty. The entire presentation was captured from in-game footage running on a standard PlayStation 5.

That is 2020 console hardware producing the footage under examination.

No single graphics feature explains the reaction

Digital Foundry divides its breakdown into performance, lighting, open-world simulation and image quality.

The strength of GTA VI comes from those systems operating together.

Dense crowds and traffic coexist with detailed environments, sophisticated lighting, advanced reflections, long views and a large amount of character animation. Ordinary traversal scenes remain visually busy even when Rockstar is not staging an explosion or a major set piece.

That accumulated workload is a bigger part of Digital Foundry's enthusiasm than any isolated ray-tracing checkbox.

Vice City stays expensive when nothing dramatic is happening

Some of the most useful footage consists of Jason or Lucia simply moving through the city.

Those sequences show what the engine maintains during normal play: occupied beaches, traffic, pedestrians, interiors and populations whose appearance changes meaningfully between locations.

Rockstar's recent development disclosures provide useful context. The company says it built new population tools and pipelines, while one Los Angeles branch works almost entirely on pedestrians.

The visual density is therefore connected to a substantial production effort rather than a single rendering trick.

The lighting is advanced without becoming an all-RT showcase

Digital Foundry identifies ray-traced global illumination and ray-traced reflections in parts of the footage.

It also sees conventional shadow maps, suggesting a hybrid lighting pipeline where Rockstar spends expensive techniques selectively rather than ray tracing every part of the frame.

That approach helps environments remain coherent when sunlight, interiors and Vice City's artificial nighttime lighting interact.

These are Digital Foundry's observations, not an official RAGE rendering specification. Rockstar has not published detailed technical documentation for the Extended Look.

The presentation is impressive partly because its compromises are visible

Digital Foundry's praise does not imply technical perfection.

The footage runs around 30fps, while DF estimates an internal resolution close to 1440p before upscale to the 4K video output.

Fine detail and edges can reveal limitations in that image, and video compression makes exact reconstruction analysis more difficult.

Rockstar is making trade-offs rather than somehow escaping the PS5's hardware limits.

Thirty frames per second buys more than image quality

A 30fps target provides about 33.3 milliseconds per frame, roughly twice the time available at 60fps.

Some of that budget supports rendering, but Digital Foundry also spends a major part of its analysis on pedestrians, traffic and open-world simulation.

That is why additional GPU power alone may not be enough to deliver 60fps on PS5 Pro. A CPU-heavy simulation workload cannot automatically be halved by rendering fewer pixels.

Consistency may be the most impressive visual feature

Rendering a beautiful empty street is easier than rendering a beautiful street full of systems.

GTA VI's clothing, vegetation, vehicles, lighting and character animation do not individually reinvent real-time graphics. They avoid obvious weak links in scenes that contain a large amount of simultaneous detail.

The same overall visual language survives beaches, interiors, highways and neon-heavy nightlife.

Image reconstruction is where DF sees more obvious room for improvement

Digital Foundry considers final image quality less remarkable than the rendering underneath it.

Its analysis points to an internal image around 1440p and does not identify an especially advanced reconstruction solution that completely conceals the limits of that source resolution.

PS5 Pro could theoretically improve this area with more GPU resources and its dedicated reconstruction technology, but Rockstar has announced no GTA VI-specific Pro mode.

More powerful hardware may improve the easy parts first

Digital Foundry also considers what future consoles or a theoretical PC version could add.

Higher resolution, improved reflections, greater draw distance and heavier ray-tracing settings are obvious possibilities.

A native 60fps target is harder to predict because some of the cost appears connected to simulation rather than graphics.

That makes GTA VI technically unusual in a useful way. More hardware could make the picture cleaner without necessarily making the entire world twice as fast.

Digital Foundry's verdict is still analysis, not Rockstar marketing

The outlet ultimately calls the Extended Look one of the most extraordinary visual accomplishments it has seen in real-time game graphics.

That remains an expert critical assessment of pre-release footage, not a statement from Rockstar and not a substitute for testing final code.

Launch analysis will still need to examine sustained performance, differences between PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and situations outside Rockstar's carefully selected presentation.

For now, one confirmed detail gives Digital Foundry's praise unusual weight: the entire showcase it is analyzing is running on a standard PlayStation 5.
